CLUB SERIES

November 5, 1904 – The American Stationer:

“Additional illustrations are presented herewith of the new designs in Congress playing cards recently issued by the United States Playing Card Company, Cincinnati, Ohio. In this installment is included the new series of Congress club backs, specially suitable for poker, whist, euchre, etc. These backs are entitled “Eastlake,” “Majestic,” “Geometric,” “Imperial,” “Shamrock” and “Lily of the Valley.” These are beautiful and stylish designs with light colors on white margins. They are reproduced in gold and many colors, and will be popular among the clubs and players who prefer conventional designs.”

These 6 backs were the first two-way designs since the first Geometric lacquer backs (considered the first Congress designs) of the early 1880s. They were printed in 1904 and 1905 (based on the very few date codes we have because these backs are extremely rare), and sold in stores as late as 1909.
